Abstract
The development of tolerance to mephobarbital (Mebaral 5-ethyl-l-methyl-5-phenylbarbituric acid) and cross-tolerance to Butisol Na was shown in rabbits. This is contrary to previous reports in the literature. The sleeping time induced by mephobarbital (40 mg./kg.) given once daily for 3 days was reduced 67% on the 3d day. This reduction was statistically significant indicating the development of tolerance. Butisol sodium (36 mg./kg.) given on the 4th day caused the animals to sleep 46.6 min. On the 14th day (10 day interval without drugs) the same dose of Butisol increased the sleeping time to 85.7 min., indicating that cross-tolerance also develops. Keywords
