Abstract
The interaction of water with well characterised samples of SiO2 has been studied by the broadening of proton magnetic resonance. Water 5–100 molecular layers from the SiO2 surface is more ordered than in the bulk liquid state. The strength of this interaction may be more dependent upon the extent of surface hydroxylation than upon SiO2 surface area or porosity.
