Abstract
After extraction of dried leaves with 90% methanol a substance was isolated from the supernatant by precipitation by ether. This substance was shown by its physical data and chromatographic behavior to be a-hederin. Hederacoside A could not be found. The material precipitated by elher from the extraction medium was found to consist of 2 compounds, hederasaponins B and C, which were present in the ratio of 15 : 100. Both compounds consisted of 2 moles glucose, 2 moles rhamnose, and 1 mole arabinose. Hederasaponin B contains oleanolic acid. Hederasaponin by acid hydrolysis yielded hederagenin. Since the same sugars are present in both hederasaponins and since both have the same degree of rotation it must be assumed that the sugar portion of both glucosides has the same structure. Physical data for the compounds isolated are given. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
