Abstract
A satis-factory technique for construction of miniature balloons and their introduction into peripheral veins of human beings is described. Pressure-volume curves of a segment of vein on the dorsum of the hand determined at room temperature and when the hand was immersed in iced (5[degree] C) or hot (45[degree] - 50[degree] C) water are presented. Attempts to demonstrate variations in tone of the superficial veins on the dorsum of the hand under these circumstances in normal unanesthetized men were unsuccessful. An intraluminal pressure of approximately 160 (range 120 - 200) mm of Hg produced moderate to severe pain localized to the segment of vein involved. Keywords
