The first direct catalytic asymmetric α-amination of aldehydes is described herein. α-Unbranched aldehydes react in this novel proline-catalyzed reaction with dialkyl azodicarboxylates to give α-amino aldehydes in excellent yields and enantioselectivities. Keywords
