Abstract
A new, apparently metastable, Mo–Ni boride phase has been observed in transmission electron microscope samples of rapidly consolidated MoNiFeB metallic glass powders. The phase is cubic with lattice parameter 1.083 nm. Its space group as determined by electron diffraction is Fd $\overline 3$m and its approximate composition is Mo3Ni3B. Because its structure, its composition, and its role as a transition phase are analogous to those of η carbide (M6C) in steels and cemented carbides, this phase has tentatively been named “η boride.”Keywords
