Sonography of abruptio placentae

Abstract
The gray scale sonographic features of abruptio placentae and their incidence are described on the basis of an analysis of 30 [human] cases. Combinations of abnormalities, including retroplacental and intraplacental anechoicities, edge abnormalities, increased placental thickness and/or round configuration, add confidence to the sonographic diagnosis. Localized subchorionic anechoicities, by themselves, are insignificant. Pathologic correlates of some anechoicities are made. By including new and expanded diagnostic criteria and using careful static and real time scanning techniques, sonographic sensitivity for detecting this condition can be increased.
