Abstract
The study of first-episode psychosis continues to gain momentum in the research community as evidenced by the range and diversity of topics addressed in both this issue and the previous issue of the Schizophrenia Bulletin (Vol. 18, No. 2). The examination of first-episode patients should provide further insight into the nature of schizophrenia and other illnesses in patients at the same stage of illness and before substantial neuroleptic exposure. These studies will also provide an opportunity to examine unique aspects or complications of the illness. The editors are deeply indebted to the researchers engaging in this extremely important area. We hope that the scientific progress, evident in these issues, will provide the basis by which to better understand the nature of mental illness and provide relief for patients and their families experiencing schizophrenia and related disorders.
