Utilization of Ammoniated Rice Hulls by Beef Cattle

Abstract
The nutritive value of sudangrass hay was compared to that of plain, toasted and ammoniated rice hulls in two metabolism and two feeding trials. Sudangrass hay was significantly superior to rice hulls in producing live weight gains, when fed at the 40% roughage level but not at the 20% roughage level. Digestive disturbances were frequent when cattle received 40% rice hull rations. Dry matter, crude fiber and total nutrient digestibility were significantly higher in the sudangrass hay rations than in the rice hull rations. Crude protein digestibility was significantly lower in the 40% ammoniated rice hull ration than in other rations containing 40% roughage. Ground rice hulls passed through the digestive tract more slowly (P<.05) than ground hay when each was fed as 20% of the ration. Copyright © 1966. American Society of Animal Science .
