Abstract
Acetylcholine (Ach) action on rat adrenocortical secretion was measured by blue tetrazolium (BT) and ultraviolet (UV) analysis of corticoids. Ach chloride or bromide increased output of BT but not of UV measurable substances of Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rat adrenals with a dose-response relationship between doses of 0.01-1000 [mu]g/100 mg adrenal. Maximal output was ca. 20% that following maximal stimulation with adrenocorticotropin (ACTH). Acetylcholinesterase inhibited the Ach but not the ACTH effect. Results indirectly support previous evidence that Ach stimulates corticosteroidogenesis via regulation of 17-hydroxylation.Keywords
