Abstract
THE PURPOSE of this communication is to present data on a series of 855 cases of chronic ulcerative colitis, with specific reference to the development of pseudopolyposis and carcinoma. A review of the literature appears to indicate a growing conviction that carcinoma may develop in patients with chronic ulcerative colitis and pseudopolyposis of long standing. The inference is that the malignant process occurs in the pseudopolyps and in association with, or as the result of, the existing chronic intestinal infection. The reported incidence of such malignant growths varies with different authors. Streicher (1938)1 reported 1.2 per cent of 217 cases. Matzner and Schaefer (1939)2 found the incidence of carcinoma among 185 patients with chronic ulcerative colitis to be 1.6 per cent, as compared with 0.5 per cent of the general hospital admissions. Brust and Bargen,3 in 1934, reported an incidence of 2.5 per cent of 800 cases.
