Continuous Versus Intermittent Exposure to Rock and Roll Music

Abstract
The purpose of this experiment was to compare the temporary threshold shift (TTS) of subjects exposed to 60 minutes of rock and roll music played continuously at an average peak intensity of 110 dB sound pressure level (SPL) with the mean TTS of subjects exposed to 60 minutes of the same stimuli and intensity level played intermittently. Results showed a significant difference in TTS between continuous and intermittent exposure conditions with greater TTS resulting from continuous exposure at 250, 500, 2,0 and 3,000 Hz. The largest threshold shift under both conditions was found at 4,000 Hz. The mean TTS of men and women were not found to differ significantly. Large differences were found among subjects concerning the absolute amount of TTS.
