Auditory Behavior in Parkinsonism

Abstract
Both conventional and special auditory tests were administered to 16 patients with Parkinson's disease and 16 age-matched controls. Results showed no appreciable difference between experimentals and controls on routine audiometric measures, such as the pure-tone audiogram and the conventional PB discrimination score. On more difficult auditory tasks, however, a deficit, closely related to the clinical types of the disease, was observed in parkinsonism. Idiopathic patients were unaffected, but arteriosclerotic and, to a lesser extent, post-encephalitic patients, did not perform as well as their age-matched controls. These results suggest involvement of the central auditory system in some parkinsonian patients.
