Abstract
Resistance change measurements have been obtained from ytterbium foil gauges, in thin rectangular grooves, placed parallel and normal to the shock front in impact‐loaded polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). Within experimental scatter, the resistance change ratios are in good agreement with the longitudinal and lateral stress ratios obtained from an independent determination in shocked PMMA. These results show the potential for measuring lateral stresses, a development expected to be very useful for shock wave studies. Keywords
