Abstract
Electronic absorption spectra have been obtained for a number of (Nb6Cl12n+ (n = 2,3,4) compounds in ethanol, or nitromethane solution and in some instances, over a limited frequency region in KBr pellets. A qualitative scheme for the bonding in the polynuclear transition metal complexes is proposed and compared with previous models. A new assignment of the electronic transitions in Nb6Cl12n+ species is made and criteria for the identification of metal–metal transitions in these systems are proposed. The effects of terminal ligands on the spectra are considered. Keywords
