Abstract
A technique based on the discrete ordinates method is described for determining the spectral absorption and scattering coefficients as well as the approximate spectrally dependent phase function for a class of highly porous ceramic materials or other comparable substances. The method requires measurements of spectral hemispherical reflectance and transmittance to be made on material samples of at least two thicknesses, and an inverse analysis based on two-dimensional S6 discrete ordinates models is then applied to determine the properties. The method is described in detail, and predictions of properties and comparison with experimental values is presented. Keywords
