Abstract
In connection with studies of evaporation, which the Soil Conservation Service is conducting, it was found necessary to make a detailed study of the temperature‐structure of the lower atmosphere. In order to achieve the degree of sensitivity respired for the study, thermocouple‐junctions constructed of No. 30 copper and constantan wire were used. These thermocouples were suspended from a tower at 12 levels between the ground‐surface and 24 feet above it. A cross‐arm at the top of the tower maintains the thermocouples at a distance of three feet from the iron pipe of which the tower is constructed. Similar thermocouples, of No. 18 copper and constantan wire, have also been inserted in the soil at six levels between the surface and three feet.
