OXYGEN CONSUMPTION AND CARBON DIOXIDE PRODUCTION DURING THE GROWTH OF YEAST

Abstract
The curves for the rate of O consumption and CO2 production of a population of yeast have been compared for the first 2 cycles of growth during 130 hrs. after seeding the population into William''s medium at 28.2[degree] C. Differential micro-respirometers were used. The 1st cycle of growth was completed at about 60 hrs. The rate of O consumption reached its maximum at about 65 hrs. after seeding during the equilibrium between the 1st and 2nd cycles of growth. This suggests that O is used mainly to oxidize products in the medium. The rate of O consumption decreases slowly thereafter and tends to an equilibrium level by the end of the experimental period. The production of CO2 is very great during the 1st cycle of growth but decreases as the sugar of the culture medium is fermented by the yeast.
