Abstract
An immunologic method based on the specificity of delayed type skin reactions in guinea pigs has been used for comparing nine strains of Mycobacterium gastri and 17 strains of M. kansasii. The nine strains labeled M. gastri formed a homogeneous group that was distinct from M. kansasii. Within the latter species, the five strains belonging to the weakly catalase-active variety were slightly different from seven strains belonging to the strongly catalase-active variety and five strains of the album variety. The strongly catalase-active strains and the album strains of M. kansasii could not be distinguished by the immunologic method.
