Abstract
Eleven freshwater, planktonic rotifer species ( Brachionus angularis, Brachionus cafyciflorus, Keratella quadrata, Nolholca squamula, Ascomorpha ecattdis, Synchaeta kitina, Synchaela tremula, Potyarthra dolichoptera, Polyanhra vulgarii, Pompholyx sulcata, Filinia brachiata ) were cultured successfully on either Rhodomonas minuta var. nannoplanctica Skuja or Stichococcus bacillaris Nägeli, in a totally synthetic medium. Three of these species had not previously been kept in laboratory culture. The method is proposed as a simple technique for the routine batch culture of a variety of planktonic rotifer species. Some important observations on handling techniques, incubation temperature, culture vessels and media are discussed. Keywords
