Abstract
A simplified version is treated of the problem of charge diffusion from the ionized gas behind an infinite plane shock wave in steady motion. The main features of the results are independent of the mechanism of ionization. A charged double layer appears at the upstream edge of the region in which ionization takes place. The electric field between the positive and negative layers is strong enough to prevent any large number of electrons from diffusing far upstream. Keywords
