Abstract
It was in German‐speaking areas that shechita tended to be outlawed in the nineteenth century. In this article the arguments around shechita and animal protection in Scandinavia, traditionally viewed as liberal states, are explored. Animal protection often disguised antisemitic sentiments, and the debates in Norway and Sweden, which adopted anti‐shechita legislation, are compared to those in Denmark, which did not. Keywords
