Abstract
To paraphrase Charles Dickens, it is the best of times, it is the worst of times. Experience in the US Armed Forces during World War II and through the 1960s, especially in the early weeks of recruit training, revealed 2 infectious diseases that were responsible for morbidity and mortality far in excess of the rates observed among civilian populations. As a direct result, research on 2 vaccines was undertaken; these 2 vaccines were successfully developed and, once incorporated into recruit-training programs, provided prompt relief from these outbreaks. Keywords
