Assay of Cholinesterase in Clinical Chemistry

Abstract
The topics discussed in this review are: the historical background; nomenclature; possible physiological function of plasma cholinesterase; cholinesterases of human blood; mode of action of the cholinesterases with reference to acetylcholinesterase and serum cholinesterase inhibitors; clinical significance of cholinesterase assay with respect to pathological states, organophosphorus poisoning and suxamethonium sensitivity; principal assay procedures for serum cholinesterase [EC 3.1.1.8] and acetylcholinesterase [EC 3.1.1.7]; and choice of assay procedures for the laboratory.
