Idiopathic Hemosiderosis

Abstract
Idiopathic hemochromatosis is unusually common in the Boston City Hospital: 1 case in approximately 800 hospital deaths1 contrasts with a reported incidence of 1 in 7000 hospital deaths.2 Because the diagnosis of hemochromatosis depends chiefly upon the demonstration of iron in the liver, and because the pigment hemofuscin has been considered by some to be a unique characteristic of the condition, this study was undertaken to determine the frequency with which hemosiderin and hemofuscin are present in the livers of patients in this hospital.Materials and MethodsTissues were obtained from 125 unselected autopsies performed at the Mallory Institute of . . .
