Abstract
This paper describes a theory for a piston-operated compressor in which shock waves are used to heat the gas being compressed. Detailed calculations are given showing the use of such a compressor to heat air for use in a hypersonic wind tunnel. The effect of real gas properties on the compression process is included in this discussion. Keywords
