Abstract
This paper presents a review of the scattered literature bearing on damage to a limb by prolonged cold short of freezing. Observations by diverse authors on alterations in blood flow, in O2 tension, in O2 utilization, and in neuromuscular function, as well as the histological changes in various tissues, are summarized. It is not yet known whether the damage is a direct effect of cooling upon cells, a result of poor transport of materials by the blood, or a result of other intermediate factors, or whether a combination of influences effects the result. Keywords
