Abstract
Physicians today are faced with increasing constraints and must reckon with the economic implications of the care that they provide. This situation is heightened in critical care medicine because intensive care units tend to consume a disproportionately high level of costs relative to other services. This review will provide an overview of cost-effectiveness analysis, a common method used to evaluate the economic impact of any health-care program, and will discuss the basic methodological approach along with pertinent studies incritical care medicine.
