Abstract
At reevaluation 3-8 yr after treatment of secretory otitis with tubulation and adenotomy, 55% of 527 ears had various pathological changes in the pars tensa. Atrophy was found in 21%, atrophy with retraction and pexi to the inducostapedial joint in 3% and adhesive otitis in 2.5% of ears. Tympanosclerosis was found in 19% and a combination of tympanosclerosis and atrophy was found in 9% of ears. The causes of atrophy and tympanosclerosis are discussed. Atrophy apparently is caused by a long-lasting negative pressure before and after treatment. Tympanosclerosis is a direct sequelae of the chronic inflammatory processes in the middle ear, leading to an increase in the number of fibrous fibers which later hyalinize. Tubulation is not responsible for the pathological changes in pars tensa. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
