Abstract
The radiative properties of a multiply scattering atmosphere composed of optically anisotropic spheres are analyzed by using the Mie-eikonal approximation for the refractive-index tensor. Our preliminary conclusion is that, in evaluations of climatic implications of atmospheric particulates, it is important to incorporate specifically the radiative effects that are due to (1) nonspherical shape, (2) nonhomogeneity, (3) orientation, (4) optical anisotropy, and corresponding distributions, in addition to those of particle size and distribution.
