Abstract
Glycemic effects of chlorpromazine (Thorazine) were studied in the mouse, hamster, and rat after intraperitoneal injection and subsequent examination of blood withdrawn from the orbital sinus using the Somogyi-Nelson blood sugar technique. Hyperglycemia was found in the mouse and to a lesser degree in the hamster. No significant glycemic changes were seen in the rat. An exaggeration of the diabetic state and decrease in survival time was found in alloxan diabetic mice treated with chlorpromazine. Protection from hypoglyce-mic convulsions and death induced by insulin was afforded to mice which had been injected with chlorpromazine 2 hours before the injection of insulin. Keywords
