The Efficacy of Intervention at Outreach Sites of the Program for Children with Down Syndrome and Other Developmental Delays

Abstract
This article describes a study undertaken to determine the effectiveness of the Model Preschool Program for Children with Down Syndrome and Other Developmental Delays at 11 outreach sites. Program staff and teachers at the sites used the Developmental Sequence Performance Inventory (DSPI) to assess the performance gains of 164 handicapped children (aged 11 months to 14 years) in five skill areas. Results showed that gains in child performance were significantly greater than predicted in four out of five skill areas. In spite of certain limitations in the study, these results offer positive support for the efficacy of the program and provide additional evidence for both early intervention and outreach as effective approaches in serving large numbers of young children with Down syndrome.
