A Failure to Hypnotically Produce Nocturnal Emissions

Abstract
Although many studies have shown that subjects will verbally report nocturnal dreams containing hypnotically suggested content (Tart, 1972), demand characteristics and other nonspecific experimental effects make this data difficult to interpret. In an effort to alleviate dependence on subjective verbal reports three subjects were given hypnotic instructions to have a nocturnal emission involving suggested, sexually stimulating material. The subjects bed clothes showed no evidence of seminal stains following either night of experimental treatment, although one dream of symbolically sexual content was verbally reported. It is suggested that further research with dreams that have a measurable physical effect is necessary.
