Abstract
Coal samples from different Indian Permian (Gond-wana) basins were systematically examined by organic geochemical and petrological methods in order to ascertain the nature of the organic metamorphism and the kinds of source materials involved. The n-alkane distribution, the carbon preference index, the percentage of extracts (from 100 gms of coal), and the pristane/phytane and pristane/nC17 ratios were found to be suitable parameters for geothermal changes. The maximum reflectance of vitrinite, volatile matter content (daf), and the content of bituminous macerals (bituminite, resinite, and so on) were also determined. Regression analysis showed a decreasing trend of percentage extracts and the liptinitic maceral content with increasing reflectance of vitrinite. A definite trend was also noticed when the n-alkane distribution pattern of the different coals of the world was compared with the Indian coals. Eventually all the parameters of organic geochemistry and coal petrology correlated with the introduction of several new parameters. Keywords
