A carnitine: acetylcarnitine exchange system in spermatozoa

Abstract
Hypotonically treated spermatozoa [ram, boar] take up L-[14C]carnitine, and release it only by a highly temperature-dependent exchange with external L-carnitine, acetyl-L-carnitine or deoxycarnitine (4-trimethyl-aminobutyrate). The exchange system is probably mitochondrial.
