Abstract
The fine structure of germinated and ungerminated sporidia of Ustilago hordei (Pers.) Lagerh. was generally found to be similar to that of other fungi. The cytoplasm exhibited electron-transparent vacuoles, endoplasmic reticulum, fat bodies, vesicles, microtubules, crystals, and dense masses as well as various membraneous structures. Unlike the typical fungal cells, such as the N. crassa cell, sporidia of U. hordei contained elongated as well as branched mitochondria. Mitochondria were observed enveloped in membraneous structures and at times contained mesosome-like bodies. Nuclei with large discontinuities in the nuclear membrane were also observed. Keywords
