Morphological Phase Distribution and Respirometeric Precision in Trichoplusia ni1 Larvae2, 3

Abstract
Fourth and 5th-stage Trichoplusia ni (Hübner) larvae were morphologically segregated into 5 phases/instar. Respirometeric evaluation of the metabolic state of the insects demonstrated significant differences between instars, and between phases within the instars. The feeding stage was separated into 2 morphologically and physiologically distinct phases. Distribution of larvae by instar and phase was not reliably predictable by age. Metabolic state appeared to be phase-dependent in particular, and only generally age- or weight-dependent. Applicability of this information for increasing experimental precision is discussed.
