Calculation and Experimental Verification of Eutectic Systems with Nematic Phases

Abstract
On the basis of the thermodynamics of ideal systems it is possible to calculate the melting curves of binary eutectic systems. We Compare calculated and experimental curves for 15 binary systems with 4,4′-di-n-alkoxybenzenes as components. Because of the occurrence of mixed solid crystals there are usually noticeable differences between calculated and experimental values in systems with neighbouring members of the homologous series. In most other cases the agreement between theory and experiment is good. A simple method for the theoretical estimation of eutectic points of multicomponent systems is described and proved.
