IT and the new modality of community mental health care

Abstract
Information technology (IT) has become vital to the practice of contemporary community mental health care. Technology shapes the organisation of work around it. The twentieth century has seen the development of technologies in work associated with the treatment of mental illness, that first transformed asylums into hospitals and then enabled the development of community care. The need to focus community mental health care upon the management of the severe long term mentally ill in recent years, has made for the development of ‘case management’. This has become more refined by the use of IT towards the development of ‘clinical case management’. Yet inconsistencies in practices and information systems still require greater harmonisation for more efficiency in the management of community mental health care.
