Abstract
The free volume theory of the liquid state is extended to multicomponent mixtures by using the method of moments in the treatment of the order‐disorder problem. Retention of only the first moment yields an approximation to the partition function which has recently been studied by Prigogine and Garikian and by Prigogine and Mathot. An approximation equivalent to retaining the third moment is given, and the calculation of the thermodynamic functions from the first moment approximation is discussed. Keywords
