Lowering of sintering temperature of Pb(Zr,Ti)O3ceramics by the addition of BiFeO3and Ba(Cu0.5W0.5)O3

Abstract
The low temperature sintering of 0.5 wt% MnO2-added Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3 (PZT) ceramics has been successfully attempted for the suppression of the volatilization of PbO component which leads to the compositional fluctuation and the contamination of surroundings. The effect of both additives of perovskite-type structure, BiFeO3 and Ba(Cu0.5W0.5)O3, on the sintering temperature and dielectric properties of the PZT ceramics has been investigated. It has, therefore, been proved that these additives were helpful in both the lowering of the sintering temperature and the improvement of the dielectric properties: 0.92PZT-0.05BiFeO3−0.03Ba(Cu0.5W0.5)O3 ceramics was sintered at 935°C for 30 min and gave the following dielectric data: ϵr = 870, tan δ = 1.0%, Tc = 290°C. The characterization of the PZT ceramics was also carried out by means of DTA, XRD and SEM.
