Abstract
How is the fetus permitted 270 days of intrauterine life by the same mother who will promptly reject fetal or paternal tissues grafted at any other site? Intensive research effort during the past 20 years has yielded much new information, but this immunologic enigma remains unresolved. A fresh insight into the issue appears to be provided through the findings of Rocklin et al. in an immunologic study of unsuccessful gestation reported in this issue of the Journal (p. 1209). They show that a paternal antigen-specific lymphocyte blocking factor normally found in maternal serum is absent in women who have had . . .Keywords
