Abstract
It is argued that the primary categories of the Code proposed by the American Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature, and adopted by other national codes—namely, rock-stratigraphic, biostratigraphic, and time-stratigraphic units—constitute a false trilogy, based on faulty premises and expressed in unnecessarily involved jargon. All stratigraphic deductions are based on three things, namely, strata, fossils, and surfaces of contact between strata, and stratigraphy has a unity which derives from the intimate relationship between stratal type and fossil assemblage. Keywords
