Abstract
ALTHOUGH the assay procedures for the determination of estrogenic potency by the vaginal smear technique are well established, and vary from laboratory to laboratory only in minor details, the interpretation of the results of these assays is often open to question. The matching of the responses to the standard and unknown as contemplated by the earlier writers (reviewed by Gustavson, 1939) is a matter of chance and when these responses are not exactly equivalent the estimation of potency becomes dependent on the judgment of the assayist. Further, the only measure of the accuracy of these determinations is their reproducibility, and the evaluation of this characteristic is frequently more subjective than objective. Keywords
