Linkage Tests Among Genes for Six Qualitative Characters in Sunflowers1

Abstract
Inheritance and linkage relationships among genes for fertility restoration (Rf1), resistance to rust, Puccinia helianthi Schw. (R1), resistance to downy mildew, Plasmopara halstedii (Farl.) Berl. et de Toni (Pl2), resistance to Verticillium wilt, Verticillium dahliae Kleb. (V), recessive branching (b1), and genetic male‐sterility (ms) were studied in sunflowers, Helianthus annuus L. The monogenic inheritance of each of these traits was confirmed. A close repulsion linkage, or allelic relationship, of R1 with Pl2 was identified on the basis of inoculations with races 1, 2, and 3 of rust and the Red River race of downy mildew, respectively. No recombinant types were recovered from among 543 F3 lines and 105 F4 lines tracing to two crosses. Independent inheritance was shown for Rf1 with R1, b1, Pl2, and V; R1 with V; Pl2 with b1 and V; V with b1,; and ms with b1.
