Study of lymphocyte sub-populations inGiardiainfected mice

Abstract
Thymectomized, irradiated and normal female Swiss albino mice of the same age and weight were infected with Giardia lamblia cysts of human origin. One group of mice was killed every third day until Day 15 post infection. Lymphocyte subpopulations from the spleen and Giardia trophozoite counts from the intestine were assessed. There was a progressive increase in trophozoite counts with a peak on Day 9; counts then fell until Day 15. Trophozoite counts were higher in the thymectomized, irradiated mice than in the controls, and this was statistically significant by Day 15. Giardia infection alone did not depress the T cell population although a slight increase in the B cell count occurred during the peak trophozoite counts. The rise and fall in the trophozoite counts in thymectomized, irradiated group was correlated with the T cell spleen counts.
