Abstract
Five cases of allergic granuloma of the prostate occurring exclusively in asthmatic patients have been reported in detail. The lesions are characterized histologically by areas of fibrinoid necrosis within histiocytic granulomas with an intense eosinophilic infiltration. The cause is unknown, although the condition is considered to be the result of a hypersensitivity reaction. Symptoms are those of vesical neck irritation and rapidly progressive lower urinary tract obstruction, which is corrected by transurethral resection. Marked eosinophilia may be present. Similar allergic granulomas and necrotizing vasculitis (allergic granulomatosis variant of periarteritis nodosa) were found in the lungs of one of the patients who died. Prompt recognition and early steroid therapy may be of value in the management of future cases. Keywords
