Abstract
While the corporal punishment of children is an important topic for investigation, Straus' model fails to demonstrate how the physical punishment of children results in the adult use of violence towards children, “spouse abuse,” assault, and homicide. The model is not based on an adequate conception of human learning or development; nor does it provide a suitable theoretical basis for privileging corporal punishment as a major cause of adult violence. Finally, the model fails to provide a context of gender, class, and race for interpreting an individual's experience and use of violent acts. Keywords
