Adrenal Cortical Hormones: Analysis by Paper Partition Chromatography and Occurrence in the Urine of Normal Persons

Abstract
The technic of paper partition chromatography modified by the use of non-aqueous solvent systems has been found suited to the microanalysis of adrenal cortical hormones. Details are given for the separation of the related compounds by chromatography. The presence of 2 of these compounds, viz., Kendall''s compound E and 17-hy-droxy-corticosterone, in the urine of normal persons, is indicated by the agreement in chromatographic behavior of the urinary compounds and the known steroids, the similar movements of their esters; the characteristic color reactions; and the typical u.-v. absorption curves. No other cortical hormone was found in appreciable amts. The solvent systems descr. may be of value in the purification of synthetic cortical hormones by partition chromatography in starch at filter paper pulp columns.
