FUNGAL ENDOCARDITIS: REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE AND REPORT OF THREE CASES

Abstract
Thirty-one previously reported cases of fungal endocarditis are reviewed and three additional cases (two due to Histoplasma capsulatum and one to Coccidiodes immitis) are reported. The fungi implicated are Candida, Blastomyces, Coccidioides, Aspergillus, Cryptococcus, Histoplasma and Mucor. Candida and Histoplasma endocarditis are the most common, each comprising about a third of the 34 cases. Establishing the diagnosis of mycotic infection is becoming increasingly important as specific therapy becomes available. It is felt that awareness of endocarditis as a manifestation of fungal disease, and the use of cultural and histologic technics appropriate for the demonstration of fungi, will allow the diagnosis of fungal endocarditis to be made more frequently during life.
